Everyone’ s East Lake Project
Originator:
“Everyone’ s East Lake” Art Project that initiated by an architect Li Juchuan and a photographer Li Yu, both of whom are Wuhan inhabitants.
Origin:
At the end of March 2010, many Wuhan inhabitants read a news in a news weekly from Guangzhou that Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town Real Estate Corporation snatched with 4.3 billion yuan a piece of land of 3167 mu (211 hectares ) inside Wuhan East Lake Scenery Dist. and its outskirt area. The corporation planned to build two large-sized amusement parks (Happy Valley and Water Wonderland) and two luxury condominiums. The news caused uproars among the local inhabitants who worry about the future of the lake for the real estate project licked up a long piece of lake shore even some part of the water area.
That’ s background the art project was proposed by two artists. Facing the upcoming transitions of this biggest city lake, censorship of the reports and control of the public opinion, the two artists decided to try to use art as a channel to speak out the concerns. In the public initiative notice the artists wrote: ” … Right now, the only thing we know is that, at least for the moment, there’ s plenty of lakeshore open for us. For the moment, the lake is not the playground for the few. For this moment, there is still no need to buy tickets. So we want to offer a suggestion: let’ s all head down to the lake, as quickly as possible. It might be the last chance we have to freely enjoy East Lake as we know it. ”
Details of the plan:
The art project is open for everyone. Two initiators publicized their proposal on internet. There are two parts to the project: First, every participant visiting the lake must create a work with East Lake and its subjetc. Second, participants must then upload instantly their creations to a website created specially for the projetc.(www.donghu2010.org). The participants can carry through their own projects in any time in the time period set by the art project amd any place of the lake shore or water area. The initiators hoped this project could form a convergence and share platform for a common concern.
Historical events:
The project kicked off on June 25th. Its creators had originally envisioned it as one month long event but later extended another month. In two months, it had recorded submissions from 52 different participants with 58 pieces of works. Another two participants created two works after the expiry, finally, the works added to 60 pieces. The participants have different vocations and identities, the artists, designers, architects, punk players, theater workers, musicians, poets, scholars, freelance, teachers, students and the unemployed. The ages ranged from 1950’ s- to 1990’ s-born. Most participants are from Wuhan, but some come from Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou. It also involved the participants who born in Wuhan but lives outside also come back to take part in the projetc. The location of the works carried out almost covered all the region of the lakeshore that we could be freely to reach.
